How to identify changes as positive, negative, or neutral

Wednesday, November 9, 2022

The world is always changing, and so are our personal lives. A quick Google search for “change quotes” reveals many inspiration quotes that celebrate change as one of the beauties of life. Bob Dylan once said, “There is nothing so stable as change.” And he’s right. Things are always changing. In life, we are mostly dealing with variables, not constants. Some changes are good. Some changes are bad. And other changes are completely neutral. A certain restaurant in town can be open to customers one day, then permanently closed the next. There is always room for change. Sometimes, it can be challenging to properly classify changes by their connotations. As Arnold Bennett pointed out: “Any change, even a change for the better, is accompanied by discomforts.” What you need is a weighing system, whether quantitative or qualitative, to weigh the benefits and costs to the change to see if it is overall positive, negative, or neutral.
